A dog tearing at the frozen carcass of a horse on a snow-covered road in Saratov; a number of carts and pedestrians pass by (119). Peasant families who have abandoned their homes walking through the street (131-153). The children of these refugees are given soup by Red Cross? nurses (170-231) and are taken away in carts for disinfection (237-275), then loaded on hospital trains for the Ukraine (283-311). Refugees with horses and carts heading for the Ukraine (316-334). A number of abandoned children crouching in a hovel; one picks lice from the head of another (340-377). A dead child in the corner of a room (384-408). Three starving children in a hovel (408-432). A mother with three children sitting on the steps of a building; one of the children crying (456-469).
